Risk-benefit analysis of TB for household contact management

A presentation by Courtney M. Yuen, PhD

Summary: As countries with high TB burdens consider expanding the use of preventive therapy for contacts of TB patients, some stakeholders have asked when it should be necessary to test for TB infection prior to giving preventive therapy.  In many high-burden settings, TB infection testing can be a barrier to care, and high-risk groups such as young child contacts and people living with HIV are already given preventive therapy is given without testing.  However, preventive therapy carries can cause side effects, particularly for older adults.  This modeling study assesses the risks and benefits of using TB infection testing to decide which contacts receive preventive therapy.
